Academic Councils (Akademiske Råd)

The Academic Council is the advisory board at the faculty level. It has the right to express its opinion on all academic matters of fundamental importance to the University's activities as well as the obligation to discuss all academic affairs submitted to the Council by Rector. Furthermore, the Academic Council is responsible for conferring Ph.D. degrees and higher doctorates.

Each council is comprised of 15 members. The Dean is a natural member and Chairman of the Council. In addition, the Council is comprised of 10 representatives of the academic staff, including Ph.D. fellows, and four representatives of the students. The representatives of the academic staff are elected for a four-year term, and the representatives of the students are elected for a one-year period.

Department Councils (Institutråd)

The Department Council is the advisory body at the departmental level. The Head of Department nominates representatives of the academic staff, the technical and administrative staff, and the students in the ratio of 2:1:1 as members to the council. The Head of Department is Chairman and a natural member of the council. The additional members are directly elected by and among the academic staff, the technical and administrative staff, and the students, respectively.

The Department Council offers advice in matters pertaining to the general guidelines of the department's activities and development, the research and education plans and other general affairs. The Department Council is informed about and can comment on the department's budget and accounts.
