Aalborg University in the Top 100 on Times Higher Education list · 31. May 2012

Ranking number 67, Aalborg University has moved into Times Higher Education’s brand new list of the world’s best young universities. The Times list defines ‘young universities’ as universities of an age of less than 50 years.

The new list of the world’s best young universities is complimentary to the Times’ World University Rankings of the world’s best universities regardless of age, which is published every fall. In the fall of 2011, Aalborg University ranked number 362 on that list.

Rector of Aalborg University, Finn Kjærsdam, regards the new list of young universities as a new, exciting and not least fair initiative:

- In a way, I feel we are competing on more equal terms here than when we are competing with universities with several hundred years under their belt. Obviously, with the older universities’ network as well as scientists’ and business life’s familiarity with them, we cannot exactly compete. Being only 40 years old, we have a completely different history which comes into its own much better on the list of the top 100 universities below 50 years.

- It has to be made clear that ranking lists to a great extent are used as advisers by e.g. parents and employers regarding which universities it is prestigious and well reputed to be a graduate of. It does not necessarily indicate anything about the academic quality of the respective universities, although of course, many of them are actually excellent academically.

- It is the ambition of Aalborg University to be among the five per cent best universities in the world. With a total number of about 12,000 universities in the world, excluding college universities, we are among the 3 per cent best universities with a ranking of 362. As for now, I am very satisfied with those results, and I am confident that with our current progress, we will advance further on the list the coming years, concludes Rector Finn Kjærsdam.
