Nanomaterials and Nanophysics

Nanotechnology can be used in numerous different contexts such as development of new materials and new technologies. The Master's programme in Nanomaterials and Nanophysics focuses on designing, fabricating and controlling materials and components with dimensions on the nanoscale, i.e. from 1 to 100 nm. You will learn how nanotechnology can be used to develop new optic and electronic components and new materials for use in communications technology, sensor technology or catalysis. Furthermore, you will gain insight into the possibilities, issues and challenges that engineers within nanotechnology are faced with on a day-to-day basis.

AN INTERDISCIPLIARY FIELD OF STUDY

When studying the two-year Master’s programme in Nanomaterials and Nanophysics, you have the opportunity to investigate the fundamental science as well as the contemporary research that make up the field of nanotechnology. You have time to immerse yourself in topics you find particularly interesting and you can take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

Applying the most advanced nanofabrication technology to materials makes it possible to obtain decisive control over their properties, and thereby construct unique materials and components with new and unexpected properties for applications within for example energy technology, communication, catalysis and data storage and processing.

Studying Nanomaterials and Nanophysics, you get to work with the special electronic and optical characteristics of nanomaterials. Moreover, you gain insight into the development of nanotools and nanodevices.

  • optoelectronics
  • nano optics
  • surface physics

In your semester projects, you and your project group will work with complex and often interdisciplinary issues in relation to nanomaterials and nanophysics that challenge you to use all of your collected knowledge to come up with possible solutions. You are encouraged to occasionally collaborate with external organisations and businesses in your projects to get an idea of the work processes and current issues in the industry. This will prepare you better for your own work life after you graduate.

This is a full-time study programme, which is characterised by problem based project work in groups. You will be working closely with other students most of the time, and you are required to be present at the university on a daily basis and spend a vast majority of your day there.

You have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities including a class 100 clean room with modern equipment for micro and nanoscale fabrication and characterisation as well as a new, fully equipped biochemistry lab including a class 1 area and state-of-the-art biophysical investigation equipment.

Nanobiotechnology is an interdisciplinary field of study, building on knowledge within physics, chemistry, biotechnology, mathematics, and materials science. As an expert within this field of study, you can therefore be invaluable when solving some of the significant future challenges in relation to for example health and environment.

As a graduate in Nanomaterials and Nanophysics, your work tasks may include:

  • Developing components and new materials for e.g. bandages and prosthetic devices
  • Developing apparatus, methods, components and materials for optical and electronic communication and data storage
  • Developing and improving fuels, materials and systems for e.g. solar power cells or energy storage

PROBLEM based learning (PBL)

Aalborg University is famous for its problem based learning where you work in a team on a large written assignment often collaborating with an industrial partner.
