Summary of the programme

Working in a global labour market requires a broad knowledge of everything from politics and history to culture and language. It also requires intercultural understanding and an ability to take an ethical stance. All this you will learn about on the Bachelor’s degree programme in Language and International Studies, English at Aalborg University. Colloquially, the programme is called LISE, which stands for Language and International Studies, English.

Academic contents

The LISE programme is focused on international relations, topics such as human rights, intercultural understanding, peacebuilding, and international organisations. The programme is structured so that, in the first part of the semester, you will be taught a number of subjects – and then, in the second part, you will focus on your semester project (everything from important international conflicts to issues such as food security and political communication). In addition, language teaching is part of the first three semesters as well as the sixth semester.

LISE students have the opportunity to stay abroad during the 5th and 6th semesters, participate in AAU’s Global Graduate Programme and each semester arrange a number of guest lectures from embassies and organisations and other academic activities.

In the overview, project modules are marked with an asterisk.

Stays Abroad

The programme has a number of cooperation agreements with foreign universities, so you will get a wide range of opportunities. If there is a particular university that you dream of studying at for a semester, you also have the opportunity to do so, even if AAU does not have a cooperation agreement with them.

You will still receive a State education grant (SU) during your semester abroad. The programme’s teachers will advise on the academic dimension of the stay, and Aalborg University’s International Office has many years of experience in sending AAU students on study or internships abroad. You also have the opportunity to apply for AAU grants via the office.

Master's opportunities at AAU

With a BA in LISE, you can continue on a Master’s programme at AAU, in Europe and elsewhere around the world. You can apply for programmes focusing on development, international relations and security, regional studies and with an international business orientation.

The students who choose to take their Master’s degree at Aalborg University typically choose to continue their studies in one of the following programmes:

    Job and career

LISE students work with everything from embassies to humanitarian organisations, to the Danish Defence, tourism and migration. As a student, you gain competencies to analyse international politics, cultural trends, and to communicate about international relations in English. You specify your career path through your choice of Master’s degree.

Former LISE students work in a range of areas, from the EU to international aid organizations to communal offices in Denmark working with integration to the UN. At the master’s level at AAU, the primary programmes followed by LISE students include an internship semester, providing the opportunity for close contact with the kind of organization with which you seek to work.

    Life after LISE

    • In this document, you will find information generated from contact with 336 LISE graduates between 2012 and 2022. This information should help give you a picture of "Life after LISE."
    • On our LinkedIn page, you can meet many current and former LISE students.
At the heart of any job with the United Nations, lies a deep understanding of international relations and cultural diversity. Mastering these elements both theoretically and in practice is the key to success not just in your career but also in your personal development in any international organization. LISE gave me the theoretical foundation to thrive in my job in the UN, where I am in daily contact with state as well as non-state actors, and have colleagues from all over the world.
