Application and requirements

China and International Relations is an interdisciplinary specialisation. Admission is open to students with a relevant BA degree in either social science or the humanities, for instance political science, sociology, China studies, history, human geography or anthropology.

Restricted admission to the master's degree programme in Development and International Relations and European Studies

If you want to apply for the specialisation in China and International Relations, you must apply for the Master's degree programme in Development and International Relations with specialisation in China and International Relations or the Master's degree programme in European Studies with specialisation in China and International Relations.

In 2019, AAU expects to offer the following number of student places:

  • 69 student places at Development and International Relations (Aalborg)
  • 10 student places at Development and International Relations with specialisation in China and International Relations (Aalborg and Beijing)
  • 2 student place at European Studies with specialisation in China and International Relations (Aalborg and Beijing)
  • 65 student places at Development and International Relations with specialisation in Global Refugee Studies (Copenhagen).

ASSESSMENT AND PRIORITISATION OF THE QUALIFIED APPLICANTS WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE BASIS OF THE FOLLOWING SELECTION CRITERIA:

  1. The grade point average for ECTS credits obtained during the qualifying Bachelor's degree at the time of application
  2. The applicant’s motivation for applying for admission to the master’s degree programme, including a description of the following elements (the motivational text must be in English and must not exceed one page):
  • Knowledge of subjects relevant to the master's degree programme achieved for instance through work/voluntary work for companies, organisations or institutions (these subjets can for instance be international relations, development studies, European studies, international political economy, area studies (e.g. China Studies or Latin American Studies), migration studies, refugee studies, cultural studies, globalization studies, integration studies, international law). The knowledge of the subjects must be documented and uploaded through for example a confirmation or a letter of recommendation from the employer.
  • ECTS credits obtained during the qualifying bachelor's degree within relevant subject areas (international relations, development studies, European studies, international political economy, area studies (e.g. China Studies or Latin American Studies), migration studies, refugee studies, cultural studies, globalization studies, integration studies, international law.

Applicants who already have a Master's degree will normally only be admitted to a new Master's degree programme with restricted admission if vacant student places are available. In case of exceptional circumstances, you can apply for an exemption. Together with your application for admission, please enclose documentation for the exceptional circumstances in question.

Official English language requirements

Applicants applying for Master's programmes at Aalborg University must submit results of an IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge test with the below mentioned minimum scores:

Danish B level in English compares to:

IELTS (academic test). 6.5 overall band score
TOEFL (internet-based): Minimum score: 85
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (CPE): 180 / level C1
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): 180 / grade C
ECPE: Passed test including certificate

How to apply

When you apply for a Master's programme at Aalborg University, you have to use STADS-DANS which is a national Danish digital application system in which the entire application process is handled.

Please note that some of the programmes offered may be subject to restricted admission. That means that the individual programmes may have a limited number of student places. Information on the programmes affected and the exact number of places offered will be available shortly when finally clarified.
