Cities and Sustainability is located at AAU at Rendsburggade 14 centrally in Aalborg 

To enter the Master’s Programme in Urban, Energy and Environmental Planning with specialisation in: Cities and Sustainability (CiSu) you must have a relevant bachelor degree.

The bachelor in Urban, Energy and Environmental Planning or Geography at Aalborg University gives you direct access to the programme.

Other relevant bachelor degrees could be within engineering, surveying science, biology or a corresponding education after specific assessment, e.g. within planning.

Students with another Bachelor’s degree are, upon application for the master programme, evaluated individually and the relevance of the bachelor degree is assessed through this process.

For the master's programme, we only have a September intake. Students seeking admission to the entire master's programme have the following deadline:

Students applying for the spring or autumn semester as a guest/exchange semester

Students seeking admission to master's programme as an international exchange student have the following deadlines:

1 April for the September intake

15 October for the February intake

Please note

Exchange on 3rd semester at one of the three partner universities 

  • Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona
  • Technische Universität Hamburg 
  • Universidade de Aveiro

can (like all other guest exchanges at another (foreign) university), require you meet certain conditions e.g. a certain number of modules (ECTS) within mathematics and natural science. 


Please note that it is only possible to change your choice of specialization within the same study programme if you have not used any examination attempts and/or passed any modules on your original choice of specialisation. Additionally, there has to be free study places on the specialization you wish to switch to.

Official English language requirements

Applicants applying for Master's programmes at Aalborg University must submit results of an IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge test with the below mentioned minimum scores:

Danish B level in English compares to:

IELTS (academic test). 6.5 overall band score
TOEFL (internet-based): Minimum score: 85
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (CPE): 180 / level C1
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): 180 / grade C
ECPE: Passed test including certificate

How to apply

When you apply for a Master's programme at Aalborg University, you have to use the Application Portal which is a national Danish digital application system in which the entire application process is handled.

Please note that some of the programmes offered may be subject to restricted admission. That means that the individual programmes may have a limited number of student places. Information on the programmes affected and the exact number of places offered will be available shortly when finally clarified.
