Feeling challenged by the corona-crisis?

You are certainly not alone. Aalborg University is working relentlessly to get the teaching and the everyday life up and running online. In AAU Student Guidance, we get phone calls from students who are concerned about their everyday life, which has been altered. These challenges are expected and of course depend on the situation of the individual student. For some students it is challenging to create and maintain a good structure in an everyday situation where private life and study life merge, for others it is difficult to get uninterrupted peace and quiet study time because there are children at home who need attention. Yet others are concerned about the exams that lie ahead.

Therefore, we have gathered some tips and links that hopefully can help you.

Structuring your everyday study life

    Overview of your weekly tasks

    • What, exactly, do the assignments entail? E.g. which books do you need to read, or which texts do you have to write for the group?
    • Which deadlines do the different tasks have?
    • If you are in doubt or if there is something you don’t understand, be sure to ask your professors, co-students and group members for help

    Prioritise your tasks

    When you have created an overview of your tasks, for example by making a to-do list, the next step is to look at in which order should you prioritise the different tasks or partial tasks during the day or for the whole week. For each task on your to-do list it can be a good idea to ask yourself the following:

    • Can it wait?
    • Is it important?
    • Can I get others to help me or delegate some of the assignments?

    Maintain a good structure for your studies

    You probably already know what time of day you do your best work. It is not necessarily from 8 am to 4 pm. If 11 am to 9 pm works better for you then do that. The most important is that you maintain some daily routines, getting out of bed, having breakfast, get studying, have lunch break, and back to studying so you can enjoy your free time with a good conscience.

    Breaks along the way are important. It is the breaks and the short procrastinations (e.g. FaceTime/WhatsApp conversation with a study or take a quick walk in the good weather) that help your brain reload for another round of studying. Set an alarm on your phone to make sure that you start studying again after your break.

    In order to work in some routines for when you study and when you have free time, in the beginning it may be of some help to write all your study related tasks and other tasks in a week schedule. It is important that you adjust the schedule as you go along. Especially if you the kind of person who is optimistic with your time.

    Meet other students – at a distance

    Boblberg is an online platform to meet like-minded who are looking for someone to share interests with or just want to find new friends, communities or learn something new. There are a lot of people out there, who would like to take part of something with others and it is easy to search on interests or the area you live in. On top of that, it is free!

    Want to talk with other students about how they motivate themselves these days? What do they do to avoid too much procrastination? Or how do they keep from over-studying? You can visit the Study Counselling Service’s online study community. The web-page is currently only in Danish but your browser should be able to translate it.

    FAQ about teaching activity, exam, deadlines and more

    The university is working hard on being able to continue the teaching activities and examinations via digital platforms on all three campuses. Along the way, different challenges show up and there are new questions from students. Follow the link to get answers to frequently asked questions and find other relevant information from the university.

    Examination rules during the lock-down

    The university has developed some temporary rules for examinations. The rules apply to all study programmes at AAU and are to ensure that it is possible to continue examining during the lock-down and that the exams are held in a sound manner.

    The university is continuously working on handling the exams during the lock-down and that can lead to the rules being updated. After the lock-down is over there will be an announcement as to when the temporary rules no longer will be used. If you are in doubt on how the rules will affect you, you should contact your study programme.
