Guest Lecture: High power converters, past, present and future for the energy transition

Power grids are and will be more and more dominated by power electronics converters as HVDC and FACTS converters as power electronics in medium and low voltage distribution. In this talk the advent of VSC for HVDC and STATCOM will be discussed retrospective as the current situation and we will navigate into future scenarios for high power electronics as innovation and needs. Voltage Sourced Converters are enabling the energy transition into scenarios of 90% electrification that will lead to 50% primary energy saving in 2050.  By 2035 Power electronics will be mainstream and the journey is expected to continue, new needs arising and new possibilities from power electronics technology and digitalization, excepted more meshed DC grids at Generation, while ac will remain with new Power Quality needs. Power electronics will be a key player to improve environment, economics and social benefits of the power grid.


Frans Dijkhuizen received his electrical engineering degree in 1995 and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2003, both from the Eindhoven University of Technology TU/e, the Netherlands.

He joined ABB Corporate Research in Västerås Sweden in 2001 working mainly in the field of high-power electronics. Now he is with Hitachi Energy Research Västerås Sweden. His areas of research since 2001 is grid connected power electronics converters R&D for HVDC, FACTS, BESS and many other applications.  He is a Research Fellow, inventor or co-inventor of 40+ patents, Affiliated Faculty with the University KTH Stockholm, member of the IEC/TC115/WG15 HVDC Grids Systems and associated editor for the IEEE Power electronics Transactions and Industry Applications Transactions.
