Inauguration of VILLUM Young Investigator and VILLUM Investigator grants

Microbes play a vital role in most processes in the biosphere and are essential for human health and for solving present and future environmental challenges. However, millions of bacterial species exist on the planet, but only a small fraction have been characterised. The vast majority remains completely unidentified and is known as the “microbial dark matter”.

27.11.2017 kl. 14.00 - 27.11.2017 kl. 17.00

With the VILLUM Young Investigator, and VILLUM Investigator grants, Mads Albertsen and Per Halkjær Nielsen will work on illuminating the microbial dark matter. This will take place by developing novel high throughput methods to identify the microbes and by studying their function and interactions under in situ conditions in unprecedented detail. A new comprehensive generic understanding of selected ecosystems will be provided, e.g. in relation to a sustainable development, recovery of resources and production of bioenergy.

Two world-renowned scientists, Professor Michael Wagner, University of Vienna and Professor Thijs Ettema, Uppsala University, will provide exciting talks on how new techniques are transforming our understanding of the origin of eukaryotes and our ability to study microbial dark matter in situ.
