Invitation to pre-defence: Sandro Nickel
Title of thesis: European Anti-Terrorism and Human Rights: Recent Conflict and Division
30.08.2018 kl. 13.00 - 15.00
PhD pre-defence by Sandro Nickel
My PhD thesis delivers a human rights-based analysis of anti-terrorism policies in a European context, looking at the cases of the UK, Germany, and the EU. It claims that all three players have at times breached human rights norms, either in terms of legal standards or in terms of the wider aims of the concept of human rights. The EU, however, provides at the same time as it breaches human rights, safeguards for the protection of the same. Human rights breaches could for the mentioned cases be detected both in terms of a more narrow legal approach to human rights connecting to legally binding rights documents and court rulings, but also in terms of a broader understanding of human rights, connecting to the wider aims of rights, such as the guarantee of dignity, freedom and justice (the ‘spirit of rights’). Such breaches not only threaten human rights standards, but also the relation between the individual and state (to the benefit of the state) and endanger the free unfolding of human beings and thus essential cornerstones of every democratic society. Clearly, both short and long-term alternatives to the rights-infringing policies that often are applied by European states are a necessity in order to break the circle of rights violations, radicalization and counter-radicalization.
The pre-defence starts with a presentation by Sandro Nickel followed by the discussant's comments and an open discussion. The pre-defence will be in English.
Registration for the pre-defence is closed. If you need further information, please contact programme secretary Marianne Høgsbro.
