”Importance of immigration for the microbial community structure of activated sludge systems”

Microorganisms are the key players in many natural and engineered ecosystems, such as wastewater treatment plants. The latter are characterized by continuous immigration of microorganisms transported via the influent wastewater into the system, where the microbial communities reside and carry out the biological wastewater treatment. However, the role of microbial immigration in wastewater treatment plants is still debated. This PhD project explored the impact of microbial immigration for the communities in activated sludge systems of different wastewater treatment plants in Denmark, also in relation to full-scale disturbance and community dynamics.
