“Experimental Validation and Proof-of-Concept of 5G Dense Small Cells Networks in Indoor Environments”

The 5G dense small cells deployments, where Interference is expected to be the main limiting factor of the network performance, are considered one of the key enabler for improving the capacity and reliability of a network. To evaluate the feasibility of such a 5G concept, the work of this thesis analyzes essential transmission and reception techniques, as well as resource allocation schemes, in realistic indoor environments using a novel hybrid experimental approach. The work also discusses the design of an agile multi-node multi-antenna testbed that was developed to enable the experimental study. The proposed hybrid experimental approach is applied to assess the performance of dense deployments in two main scenarios: an indoor office-like scenario with an access point (AP) in each of the offices, and a multi-cell deployment in an indoor industrial scenario. In the first scenario, the performance of multi-antenna interference rejection schemes combined with rank adaptation mechanisms is evaluated using proposed approach, and obtained results verified the potential of such schemes being a right candidate in improving the network capacity in dense 5G scenarios. On the second scenario, the testbed is employed to study the propagation characteristics of industrial environments, as well as evaluating the potential of several multi-connectivity schemes to provide highly-reliable communication.
