Radio Channel Characterization and Over-the-Air Performance Evaluation of 5G Antenna Systems

The coming fifth Generation (5G) wireless systems are expected to accommodate the dramatically growing demand of mobile data communication. The exploitation of millimeter Wave (mmWave) frequency bands and large-scale antenna systems at both communication ends are regarded as the enabling technologies for future 5G cellular systems. These new features of 5G systems have posed challenges for channel modelling and performance testing methods of antenna systems.

In this talk, Fengchun Zhang will focus on two closely linked research topics, i.e., radio channel modelling and Over-The-Air (OTA) performance testing of antenna systems under fading channel conditions. For channel modelling, beamforming algorithms for channel estimation and characterization will be presented. For OTA testing, the wireless cable method and the Multi-Probe Anechoic Chamber (MPAC) method are discussed.
