Title: Integrating Analytics with Enterprise Information Systems - Generating Value from Enterprise Data for Operations and Supply Chain Management Companies
By Claus Boye Asmussen
Abstract
Technological progress over recent decades has enabled Operations and Supply Chain (O&SCM) companies to record, manage and process data through analytics into valuable insights and actions. The insights and actions have proved to enable O&SCM companies to outcompete competitors, where several industrial reports have shown superior overall company performance when having successfully integrated analytics into their business processes. Naturally, this has attracted the attention of both practitioners and academics. However, these results have been difficult to replicate, where industry reports show that as few as 18 percent of companies achieve their desired business objective after having deployed their analytics initiative. Consequently, there is a need for a better understanding of the underlying value mechanisms of integrating analytics with Enterprise Information Systems (EIS).
The research is based on a review of the knowledge base and by constructing and deploying analytical artefacts in real environments, where the findings and learnings are combined to identify value mechanisms. The thesis proposes a value framework that links the research areas of analytics, EIS, O&SCM, analytics value theory, and IT business value theory, with the identified value mechanisms. The thesis further contributes with the concept of an analytic decoupling point, which aids in managing explorative and exploitive analytical processes.
Additionally, the thesis proposes five recommendations for managers, which are:
- Separate analytics and Business Process Management
- Build cross-functional capable teams
- Democratise data science
- Make use of the analytic decoupling point
- Use state-of-the-art open-source software
The research of the thesis has mainly been conducted at Arla Foods and is a part of the MADE Digital program.
