"Studies on membrane separation for a combined membrane and biofiltration of pesti-cides in groundwater based drinking water treatment”

ABSTRACT:

The occurrence of pesticides in groundwater aquifers is an increasing threat to groundwater based drinking water production. In Denmark, pesticides and their degradation products were detected in 21.8% of the drinking water wells, and the permitted value of 0.1 µg/L was exceeded in 4.3% of the cases in 2017.  The Danish simple treatment method (aeration and sand filtration) is ineffective towards the removal of most common pesticides that may result in increased consumer health risks if the contaminated abstraction wells are not abandoned. In this thesis, membrane separation was proposed for remediation of groundwater polluted by pesticides in a combination with biodegradation in bio-sand filters. The presented results in the current thesis show that commercially available nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes are efficient in the rejection of BAM, MCPA, and MCPP, three frequently found pesticides in Denmark. It is also exhibited that the residual concentrate stream produced by an RO membrane can stimulate the biodegradation activity of a BAM degrader bacteria MSH-1 in a bench-scale study.

The thesis also studies results on forward osmosis (FO) separation of pesticides using Aquaporin membranes, a new and interesting approach to membrane filtration in water prone to scaling. In a comparison between RO and FO processes using a synthesized thin-film composite (TFC) membrane modified by dopamine, the FO is demonstrated to be less impacted by high concentrations of a model scalant, gypsum. In conclusion, the thesis shows that membrane separation is an efficient technology for treatment of pesticides in groundwater based drinking water production and can play a significant role in the future of sustainable drinking water production in Denmark.
