Description

As a response to a world in a deep crisis, socially and ecologically, a critical self-reflection has set in among scientists in various disciplines including psychology on how modern sciences have been part of the problem. Scholars ask how we have to fundamentally rethink our scientific self-understanding including our conceptions of education and learning. Cultural Psychology contributes to a fundamental rethinking of the theory and practice of learning. Learning is understood not just as an acquisition of pregiven knowledge, but as a problem-oriented, meaning- as well as world-making activity, embedded in the learners’ everyday life. Problem- and world-oriented learning represents an essential activity in future society and a crucial question is in how far digital technologies can help to enrich such embodied practices of knowing. Digital technologies do not simply represent neutral tools, but contradictory forms of life, political artifacts embodying particular materialized actions. Based on Cultural Psychology, including critical theories of learning and digitalization, the talk engages in rethinking education for a viable future and discusses the possibilities and limits of digital technologies for problem- and world-oriented practices of learning.
