AAU Anniversary Approaching: Would You Like to Share Your Memories in a Research Project About Life At AAU?

Published online: 30.05.2023

In 2024, AAU will turn 50, and to mark this milestone the university has launched the research project 'Knowledge for the World. Aalborg University Through 50 Years'. The researchers behind the project are working on a book about AAU and are now looking for students and staff to contribute their memories and experiences.

- Aalborg University is home to many stories. About people, buildings and places. In the day-to-day life that in formative experience, education, research and management. The book aims to include perspectives from all parts of the university's life and work, says Maria Simonsen, Research Associate Professor in history at the Department of Politics and Society.

She is the project manager of the research project 'Knowledge for the World. Aalborg University Through 50 Years' that she is conducting with historian Mogens Rüdiger.  The project aims to tell the history of the university from 1974 to the present day. The project will result in a popular science book and a number of scientific articles that will be published in connection with the anniversary in 2024.

For any organisation, it’s important to continuously reflect on its own history, situation and development. What is the significance of the university’s chosen direction? Where have we been? And what is the future of PBL? Such a story helps to create identity and meaning.

Maria Simonsen, Research Associate Professor in history

She encourages students and staff to contribute with stories about their experiences and day-to-day life at AAU. These can be memorable experiences, anecdotes from everyday life, the start of the new academic year, random meetings in the hallways, exciting research projects, etc.

- It’s incredibly exciting to delve into history and see how the university has developed over the past 50 years. At the same time, the work has made clear how important it is for AAU to be better at preserving cultural-historical archive material that can tell the big and small stories about the university – both from everyday life and major events.  AAU will also turn 75 and 100 at some point. And there are many more stories to tell, says Maria Simonsen.

How to participate

If you would like to help mark this milestone, send an email to Sine Gadgaard, history student and student assistant on the project, at Sgadga21@student.aau.dk. You will then receive a form with some general questions for you to answer.

All input will be treated confidentially. When the project ends, the answers will be archived in the university's archive. If you wish your reply to be deleted, you may contact the project researchers.

If you have questions or would like further information about the project, contact Maria Simonsen at simonsen@dps.aau.dk.
