European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU)

Aalborg University is a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU).

ECIU is the leading international network of research intensive universities with collective emphasis on innovation, creativity and societal impact.

The ECIU University is an EU-funded initiative of the alliance of 12 universities in the ECIU that creates a ground-breaking and innovative educational model on a European scale.

AAU's participation in this consortium reflects the view of the university management that internationalisation and international interaction constitute important possibilities for further development of AAU activities.

ECIU University – a true European University

The increased number of complex local, as well as global challenges, makes it evident that there is a need for a new pedagogical approach to higher education – a construction of a learning and training process based on real life situations.

The ECIU University is determined to change the way of delivering education from degree based to challenge-based. It brings to life a university where students and researchers cooperate with public organizations and businesses to solve real-life challenges.

The ECIU University is an ambitious undertaking, with distinctive features that makes it unique:

  • Societal impact by solving challenges
  • Flexible, diverse and tailored education
  • Challenge-based education
  • Challenge-based research and innovation
  • Embedded mobility

The challenge-based method provides students and researchers with innovation skills and entrepreneurship attitude, as it puts together collaborative partnerships of different actors, with diverse background, coming from different sectors and disciplines. Different categories of people will then work together to identify European challenges and find relevant solutions, bringing to the discussion table different talents, backgrounds and expertise.

In the pilot phase ECIU University focuses on challenges related to UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 „Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable“.

Students, who want to make a real impact in their community or another European region can join micro-modules and engage in solving challenges. The challenges are provided by business companies and governmental institutions.

Next to participating in the challenge, students will be able to choose from a variety of micro-modules which support them to better solve the challenge. Part of the micro-modules are not challenge-based but will enable students to learn more about regional and international societal issues related to different aspects of making cities and regions sustainable.
