Renewable energy production is to be significantly expanded in the near future and will provide more unpredictable electricity production via electronic converters. These converters will already now and to a greater extent in the future operate as devices that contribute to ensuring the voltage and frequency of the electricity grid is kept stable.

Virtual synchronous machines are a promising way to create this stability. The module provides a systematic approach to the fundamental aspects and state-of-the-art within grid-adapted inverter technologies.

Topics such as the basic power electronics topologies, control of virtual synchronous machines, emulation of inertia and coordination thereof in relation to energy storage, minimization of grid errors, stability analysis and active attenuation of power oscillations are discussed.
