Thesis Summary
Most people spend a significant amount of their day indoors, often up to 16 hours at home, making the indoor environment an important factor for the health. However, it remains largely unknown whether perceived indoor annoyances from noise, odor, stuffy air, inadequate lighting, and temperatures contributes to the risk of disease.
To address this, we conducted three register-based observational cohort studies. The study population was participants from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2000, where 16,688 adults provided unique information on perceived annoyances and lifestyle. Eligible individuals were followed through nationwide registers for up to 19 years to identify outcomes of respiratory infections and depression.
The findings show that individuals who perceived many indoor annoyances had higher incidence rates of respiratory infections and depression compared to individuals with few annoyances. Additionally, individuals living in certain housing types had higher incidence rates of depression, and the association between housing type and depression was partly mediated by the number of perceived annoyances and loneliness.
