Fresh food can be difficult to find in major cities. This is usually due to lack of space and expensive supply chains.

Now a group of AAU students in the Master's programme Electronic Systems are trying to solve the problem.

They have started the company HexFarm that develops local mini-farms that can be mounted on walls in cities. This will provide fresher and cheaper food, fight hunger and reduce CO₂ emissions.

HexFarm participates in the AAU Startup Program which is currently experiencing record-breaking interest among AAU's students.

With 97 students in 68 start-up companies in Aalborg and Copenhagen, the number of students in the programme has never been greater. And Innovation Director Mads Bang is delighted.

"It is incredibly inspiring to see so many students from different disciplines working together on their ideas and visions. We are proud to be able to support their journey towards becoming the entrepreneurs of the future," says Mads Bang.

Interdisciplinary solutions to society's challenges

Across Aalborg University's degree programmes, more and more students have begun to work together to do something about society's major challenges.

It is incredibly inspiring to see so many students from different disciplines working together on their ideas and visions.

They want to use their education to make a real difference. So, they sign up for the AAU Startup Program and develop, for example, solutions in sustainable food production like HexFarm.

And more students are eager to participate in the AAU Startup Program.

"The success doesn’t stop here, because we’re starting new teams again in the autumn and look forward to welcoming even more entrepreneurs," says Mads Bang.
