From the very first day I had someone I could talk to

Line chose to study chemical engineering because she thinks chemistry is cool. It is an area in constant development, which means there is a lot of potential in working within the field of chemistry.

- My job will not be to get things done, she says. I must be the one who thinks new; optimizes things and takes them one step further. I am investigating whether it can be done cheaper and smarter, and thus better. This is constantly needed, and therefore there will always be a need for engineers.

As an example, Line mentions resistance to antibiotic as a huge challenge in the world today, because we use so many antibiotics on a daily basis, and also ingest them through our food.

- It is a huge problem when at some point we cannot even get rid of an ear infection because we are all resistant. It's a problem that people like me can help solve.

Line describes herself as an introvert - a slightly shy girl - so she was rather nervous when started studying at university. Especially socially, but she didn't have to be.

- The fact that we were immediately placed into already fixed groups was just my luck. Because it meant that from day one, I had someone I could talk to and discuss with. I felt like I had made friends within the first week.

Since then, many friends have been added to her social group. Aalborg University Esbjerg is a nice place to be, and since it is a relatively small campus you get to know each other a little more, says Line.

- You get to know a lot of people from different study programmes and levels. It feels safe and informal.

It's a nice, warm and cozy place to be. You also have good contact with your professors. They know our names and almost even our hobbies since we spend so much time with them and because we are not too many students in the classe.

When asked what she wants to highlight, Line points to the project work and group work, in addition to the close knit campus.

- When we graduate, it is a huge advantage for us that we have been used to working together - both with fellow students and with the industry. Furthermore, our projects always start from solving real problems. During seventh semester, my group and I have been in collaboration with a biotech company here in Esbjerg, called Glycom, that produces sugar for breast milk substitutes. It has been fantastic to experience  their labs, to be allowed to work with their instruments and to help solve a real problem. It took our breath away. And then it looks fantastic on our CV’s.
