Electro-Mechanical System Design

Do you want to improve constructions or create new innovative products? As a graduate from the specialisation in Electro-Mechanical System Design, you will be able to engineer systems and devices where mechanics, electronics, and intelligent control systems interrelate. In this way, synergetic advantages are used to develop mechatronic products where different technologies are merged together in the best possible way for use in e.g. industrial products and automotive components.

<h3>Optimisation and creation of new products</h3>
Studying the two-year Master’s programme in Mechanical Engineering with specialisation in Electro-Mechanical System Design, you gain knowledge within the areas of mechatronic system design, information technology, control theory, and modelling and analysis of electro-mechanical systems. This enables you to take part in interdisciplinary technical development and research projects.
You learn to optimise constructions and to create new products and systems.
During the programme, emphasis is put on disciplines such as modelling of multi-domain systems, motion control, simulation, system optimisation, and applied control engineering.
In your semester projects, you and your project group will work with complex and often interdisciplinary issues in relation to electro-mechanical system design, that challenge you to use all of your collected knowledge to come up with possible solutions. You are encouraged to occasionally collaborate with external organisations and businesses in your projects to get an idea of the work processes and current issues in the industry. This will prepare you better for your own work life after you graduate.
This is a full-time study programme, which is characterised by <a href="https://www.en.aau.dk/education/problem-based-learning">problem based project work</a> in groups. You will be working closely with other students most of the time, and you are required to be present at the university on a daily basis and spend a vast majority of your day there.
The Master programme entitles you to the designation Master of Science (MSc) in Engineering (Electro-Mechanical System Design).
Graduates from the programme have many possible career paths. Many graduates pursue a technical career in either industry or academia, whereas others favour project management positions.
In the wind turbine and in the energy industry, you can take part in the technical development and research, and you can be the technical manager of development projects. You can also choose to work in a small company as a project manager or a central project worker.

Meet two students

Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

<h3>Academic content</h3>
Studying the specialisation in Electro-Mechanical Systems Design, you will be introduced to modern mechanical engineering, which includes mechanics, electromagnetism, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and control technology. You will work with theory as well as spend a lot of time in the laboratory, where you can experiment with and fine-tune your ideas in practice.
On semester one and two, you will spend half of your study time on courses and the other half on a semester project. Each semester has an overall theme and within this theme, you conduct a semester project with your project group, where you investigate and attempt to solve a relevant issue within your field of study.
During the first two semesters, each project group consists of 4-6 students. On the last two semesters, the project groups consist of 1-3 students.
The programme offers courses within the following fields:

<li>Finite Element Methods</li>
<li>Engineering Optimisation</li>
<li>Control Theory: Multivariable and Nonlinear Systems</li>
<li>AC Motor Drives: Converters and Control</li>
</ul>
The study programmes at AAU are based on problem based learning and project work, which gives you a unique opportunity to acquire new knowledge and competences at a high academic level in an independent manner. You get to apply theory to practice in your semester projects, which will prepare you better for your future career.
