About AAU OPEN

AAU OPEN functions as both a competence unit and a publishing platform, supporting AAU employees in making their research openly available.

Experts in Open Access publishing

AAU OPEN is Aalborg University’s Open Access competence unit and publishing platform, launched in 2024 and anchored at Aalborg University Library.

As a competence unit, we provide guidance to AAU researchers on Open Access publishing. We advise on the selection of appropriate Open Access strategies and support researchers in navigating green, diamond, and gold Open Access models. In addition, we offer guidance on Open Access publishing agreements, as well as on copyright and Creative Commons licences.

We work to ensure that our researchers’ publications achieve the greatest possible impact. Therefore, we are also happy to provide guidance on commercial publishing channels when this is assessed to offer the widest reach.

AAU OPEN

A professional Open Access publisher

AAU OPEN also operates as a Diamond Open Access publisher under the name Aalborg University Open Publishing. We offer free access to a broad publication portfolio covering both research and dissemination outputs, including monographs, anthologies, reports, series, journals, and other formats.

As a general rule, publishing through us is free of charge for researchers affiliated with Aalborg University.

We publish on the national platform for scholarly Open Access publications, Open Books. We also publish our own Open Access journals on AAU OPEN Journals and act as the publisher of PhD theses from Aalborg University.

International standards and recognition

Aalborg University Open Publishing is included in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers (Kanalregisteret). This recognition affirms our status as a scholarly publisher and means that peer-reviewed publications contribute to Aalborg University’s Research and Innovation Indicator.

Furthermore, Aalborg University Open Publishing is a member of the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA), an international organisation dedicated to promoting quality and transparency in Open Access publishing.

We also adhere to the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), which constitute an international standard for responsible publishing practices. As part of this, we work with clear and transparent procedures, including for peer review.

Peer review is a central part of our publishing practice and contributes to ensuring good research practices, relevance, and innovation in research publications. Our peer review procedures are described in more detail on our page about publishing through Aalborg University Open Publishing.

Together, these recognitions and standards position AAU OPEN as a trusted and professional publishing platform and firmly place Aalborg University within the international Open Access landscape.

Mission and vision

Advisory committees

Two committees support the AAU OPEN team with strategic considerations and assessments of the overall purpose and strategy for AAU OPEN’s activities. This includes guidance and suggestions for improvements, as well as feedback on potential new strategies for Open Access publishing. The two committees have different roles in their capacity as advisers to the AAU OPEN team.
