SCImago Institutions Ranking

The ranking list includes research institutions (not just universities) from the whole world and measures the quality of their scientific work from the past five years.

Database used for data collection: Scopus (Elsevier)

The ranking list is based on thirteen indicators, divided into three groups:

  • Total number of documents published in scholarly journals– weight 8%
  • Institution's output produced in collaboration with foreign institutions– weight 2%
  • Normalised citation values – weight 13%
  • Number of publications that an institution publishes in the most influential scholarly journals of the world – weight 2%
  • Amount of an institution’s scientific output that is included in the top 10% of the most cited papers in their respective scientific fields – weight 2%
  • Amount of an institution’s output as main contributor – weight 5%
  • Amount of documents in the top 10% of the most cited papers in their respective scientific fields in which the institution is the main contributor – weight 13%
  • Total number of different authors from an institution in the total publication output – weight 5%
  • Scientific publication output from an institution cited in patents – weight 10%
  • Percentage of the scientific publication output cited in patents - weight 10%
  • Number of patent applications – weight 10%
  • Number of pages associated to the institution’s URL according to Google – weight 5%
  • Number of networks(subnets) from which inbound links to the institution website came from – weight 15%
