starts 1 february
The Master Programme in Risk and Safety Management will change its intake from February to September in 2021. Students will therefore not be able to apply for admission in February 2021 – they will have to apply for the September intake instead.
During the study programme in Risk and Safety Management, you obtain knowledge about basic probability theory as well as the collection of data within risk analysis and relevant social conditions. Furthermore, you will be introduced to the theoretical methods and strategies that are used in risk perception and communication.
During your studies, you will learn how to apply risk analysis and simulations to identify the crisis situations and risks that can occur when a project is carried out in a company. You will learn to work out plans to handle projects and to gain insight into implementation methods, ways to carry out routine tests and reporting.
As an expert in risk and safety management, you could help companies to prevent and manage different risk scenarios such as
- the collapse of a building or a bridge
- an oil leak
- fire on a drilling rig
- a chemical accident in the pharmaceutical production
- accident during discharging and installation of parts for wind turbine generators in wind parks
In your semester projects, you and your project group will work with relevant issues within the field of risk and safety management, that challenge you to use all of your knowledge to come up with possible solutions. You are encouraged to occasionally collaborate with external organisations and businesses in your projects to get an idea of the work processes and current issues in the industry. This will prepare you better for your own work life after you graduate.

This is a full-time study programme, which is characterised by problem based project work in groups. You will be working closely with other students most of the time, and you are required to be present at the university on a daily basis and spend a vast majority of your day there.
The Master’s programme entitles you to the designation Master of Science (MSc) in Technology (Risk and Safety Management).
As a graduate, you have various job opportunities. You can for instance work as a risk analyst, a work environment coordinator, or as a project manager in sectors such as wind, oil and gas, structural and civil engineering, transportation or the public sector.
With a degree in Risk and Safety Management, you will become part of a field which will be marked by growth and development in the future. The possibilities of making a career in either Denmark or overseas are therefore great.
as a student at aau you encounter …
PROBLEM based learning (PBL)
Aalborg University is famous for its problem based learning where you work in a team on a large written assignment often collaborating with an industrial partner. This study method is also called “The Aalborg Model for Problem Based Learning”. The method is highly recognised internationally, and the university is host to a successful UNESCO chair in Problem Based Learning in Engineering Education and a Centre for PBL and Sustainability approved by UNESCO.
The problem based project work at Aalborg University gives you a unique opportunity to acquire new knowledge and competences at a high academic level in an independent manner. You get to apply theory to practice when you work to solve real-life problems, and you will be well prepared for your future career. Learn more about PBL.
When doing project work, you work closely in groups with other students. This gives you the opportunity to cooperate, share knowledge and to explore larger and more complex academic problems than what you would have been able to do on your own. Furthermore, the groups serve a social purpose and make it easier for you to get to know your fellow students and feel more at home at the university. Learn more about teamwork at AAU.
COLLABORATION WITH THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY
Aalborg University works closely with the business community. This means that as a student you will work with real issues from companies and organisations. Thus, while you are studying, you already have the opportunity to enhance your academic competences with a business-oriented and practical angle.
YOUR TEACHER DOES RESEARCH
At Aalborg University teaching is research based. This means that your lecturers are doing research within the same academic field as he or she is teaching.
